Reposted fanfic.

Sweat dripped from her earrings, which were uncomfortably warm in the heated air. She ignored the droplets falling into the steam of lava, peering at the surface eddies, looking for--

There. And in a moment, a telltale spike broke the surface, enough to target. A burst of lightning from her hands brought an answering roar from the lizard as it attacked.

Perched on the rock shelf just at the edge of the lava, she laid the fire-spawned beast out quickly, even as it tried to push her into the lava, then skinned it. She crouched again, gloved fingers touching the ground just enough to balance her without getting burned, and gazed over the lava again.

She thought of the dwarf who'd sent her on this errand, denying the existence of the fierce reptiles even as he sent her to slay them-- and how even in his denial, his eyes had twitched in fear.

"I'll do it," she'd said, with a slow smile. "I feel up for a bit of fishing."

And as the lava hissed and burbled past her in its stream, she squatted on the bank, relaxed, and waiting for the next bite.

(The name of the quest she's doing amuses me no end-- it's "Incendosaurs? Whateverosaur is more like it")
