Yarn: Caron So Soft 100% acrylic, black and white, one skein each (very little of the white used)
Pattern:
Cast on 102 stitches.
Rows 1-4: 3x3 ribbing (knit 3, purl 3)
Rows 5-6: knit all stitches in black
Rows 7-13: knit chart as follows, knitting the "V" stitches in white and the "." in black:

Break white yarn and leave end to weave in.
Rows 14-21: knit all stitches in black.
Decrease rows:
Place markers every 17 stitches for a total of 6 markers.
Immediately following each marker, SSK. (slip each stitch to right needle as if to knit, insert left needle in front of both loops, knit both together.)
Do this each row until 3 stitches remain between markers.
Final row: SSK after marker, knit next stitch, pass first stitch over. 1 stitch remains between markers.
Break yarn, then thread the tail through all 6 remaining stitches; knot, pass tail through to inside of hat, and weave in.
