Cross-posting to LJ. LJ readers, I'm really on corrvin.dreamwidth.org now.

Huge storm hit OKC area. So far, two confirmed fatalities in El Reno (to the west of OKC). Our house totally missed it other than some teeny hail, pea-sized.

Very grateful. Trouble getting cats into safe places, working on that plan for next time.

Going back to bed.

It's hot.

It's 75 outside, which means it's 80+ and sweltering in my bedroom. At least the sun goes down by 6pm, and it starts to cool off, which means I can sleep then.

But right now I'm cranky, exhausted, and way too hot. I hate this weather. It makes me sleepless and miserable.

There's two kinds of chicken in the crockpot and bananas drying in the dehydrator, but I'm so hot I'm sick at my stomach, so that isn't even appeasing me.

So, I had a rousing vacation consisting of 60% sleep and good food (at least) plus some online gaming and a little bit of actually going out and doing things.

I got home and promptly overextended by going out again.

And today? The schedule includes taking the kid out shopping for glasses and new sneakers.

Yeah, I apparently don't learn very well.

Sleeping in my own bed was nice, but I really need to clean up in here. At least Geeg is glad to see me home (and purring madly).

And? OH MY GOSH. IT'S RAINING! Hooray!

weather.

So we're under a heat advisory, and being told that Monday or Tuesday we'll get a high of ONLY NINETY ONE DEGREES and this constitutes a RELIEF FROM THE HEAT. Also we haven't had a drop of rain yet this month.

(For those who don't deal in cheap American degrees, that's 32 C. Admittedly, it's currently pushing 40 in the shade, so this is a decrease, but it's not a RELIEF.)

Can anyone please recommend something to read set in a cold climate? Freezing to death sounds awesome about now.

Made it to work safe and sound.

For future reference, the Okla. DOT number for road conditions is:
405-425-2385 or 888-425-2385.

We're under a flood advisory and a "significant weather advisory"
which I've never seen before; it appears to be the combo platter of
severe storms, flooding, hail, and I don't know what-all.

I'm at work, where we have a generator, but still watching a lot of
power flickers. I may or may not have power when we get home, so if I
don't update this later, I'm still not_ded. I'm hoping to get to
leave work (an hour) early, as it is deader than a pager in the
dishwasher, but if I get home and there's no power, I'll likely just
go to bed.

Also, for all those people who think storms are "exciting" and
"thrilling" please consider volunteering to help bring spare oxygen
tanks to people whose oxygen concentrators don't work because they're
out of power. Maybe I'm just cranky, but I think it's crass to be
loudly enthusiastic about something that puts other people in danger;
if you get a thrill out of the adrenaline, do something REALLY
exciting and help people!

I think the most interesting one is the last, with the fog rising off the street.

This is a test of the emergency not_ded system.

In the event of fire, flood, tornadoes, earthquakes, boobquakes,
rioting in the streets, plagues (whether Biblical or non-Biblical),
snowpocalypse, gas prices going over $4/gallon, World of Warcraft
having a patch time exceeding 12 hours, or Malabrigo going on sale, I
will post to LJ as well as Facebook and let folks know that
I am still in the land of the living, so you don't have to worry.

After all, that's why I have post-by-email!

I may be randomly out of touch for a few days.

I'm still working my regular shift (or at least the plans so far are for this). However, tomorrow morning my dad is having heart surgery.

My mom will be staying at our place, most likely, Monday night. Or maybe she'll stay in the hospital with him (they have comfy places to sleep in the patient rooms).

Not much else to report, I guess. It's cold here (60 outside) and other than a brief trip this morning (delivering my spare mattress/box springs plus sheets to a co-worker) I've slept all day, and am planning on catching another two hours' nap before work. Walking is out of the question, it's cold and my knee hurts.

If I had more time and energy, a couple of my friends have some issues that I'd like to help them worry about. Sadly, I don't.

Well, we have another snowstorm coming in today. We have nearly a full house at work this morning starting at 7am.

I was at Wal-Mart last night picking up dinner (they were out of the Michelina's shrimp pasta I wanted, bummer) and some woman in front of me was buying THREE CASES of toilet paper (yes, 3x 24 rolls). I don't think I want to take the snow THAT seriously.

More later, I'm sure.

Am at work, having arrived safely after traversing 8 miles, about 1 mile of which was solid ice and the other 7 semi-solid ice. WHEE.

Will be working 5:30-9am today and then 8:30pm tonight to 7:30am tomorrow morning, and then back to business as usual. (I was supposed to get off 8:30-midnight tonight, but that's also a no-go with the weather.)

Stay safe, y'all!

Also note: new Grim icon by request.

From the National Weather Service:

"THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT."

Damn!

"WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 PM CST THURSDAY"

Ooooh!

"MAIN IMPACT: NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WITH SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW AND ACCUMULATION UP TO 5 INCHES IN CENTRAL OKLAHOMA AND 8 INCHES IN NORTH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA."

For those of you who live in states where "the white stuff" doesn't refer to off-brand Cool Whip for the pie, this link here contains the sum total of all winter weather preparations engaged in by the City of Oklahoma City.

If you click through to the PDF, each of those little squares is a square mile. Note that in some areas there are three mile gaps between plowing.

Anyways, on the average, 1 year in 33 has snow on the ground on Christmas; this may be our year.

"THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NORMAN HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR FREEZING DRIZZLE AND LIGHT FREEZING RAIN WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM THIS EVENING TO 9 AM CST TUESDAY."

If we don't get at least a quarter-inch of snow this year, I am going to be VERY unhappy.

What do I gotta do, clothe my household in scarlet? (Prov. 31)
corrvin: gray cat lying on the floor, text "I'll get right on that" (right on that)
High today near or over 100.

By 8pm, it may be down to the low 90's.

By 5am, it'll be nearly down to 80 for a few minutes, then start climbing again the moment the sun peeks over the horizon.

I'm going to bed right now and if I sleep until work time, fine, and if not I'll work on painting the bookshelves, and if I don't work on painting then I'll do it tomorrow after work, when it's still a balmy 95 or so.

My feet are so hot it feels like they're going to catch on fire. Blah.

For those who've been seeing news coverage of the Oklahoma wildfires:

a) I am in an area that is not currently on fire and quite a ways from anywhere that is. My eyes itch but that is all.

b) We do have a fire safety plan, and we also live in an area that is surrounded by asphalt and easy to saturate with water.

c) Red Cross is taking donations if anyone wonders how to help without getting underfoot.

d) THIS, by the way, is why I complain about warm sunny days when y'all are all bitching about your rain and snow.

You can click the "custom" button to pick from a huge list of cities, or look up the lat/long of your small town and put it in yourself.

Tired of plain fried eggs? How about a gun-shaped fried egg? See the other items under "kitchen hardware" if you also crave an ice tray that makes pi-shaped ice.

More "stuff" posts coming later. I promise. I just feel way too crappy to post right now.

For your amusement, here is our weather alert for the weekend:

ON SUNDAY... WINDS WILL TURN TO THE SOUTHWEST AT 20 TO 30 MPH AND MUCH OF NORTHERN TEXAS AND SOUTHERN AND EASTERN OKLAHOMA WILL WARM INTO THE 70S.

Yes, we have alerts like this. Stop being sick over it, it's just for fire danger.

But then, we get a cold front:

WINDS WILL SHIFT TO THE NORTH AND TEMPERATURES WILL PLUMMET BEHIND THE COLD FRONT... POSSIBLY 20 TO 30 DEGREES IN ONLY A COUPLE HOURS. BY DAYBREAK MONDAY... TEMPERATURES WILL HAVE FALLEN UP TO 50 DEGREES FROM THE HIGHS ON SUNDAY... AND WIND CHILLS WILL RANGE FROM NEAR ZERO IN NORTHERN OKLAHOMA TO AROUND 20 ALONG THE RED RIVER.

And...

LIGHT RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE SUNDAY EVENING... AND IF IT OCCURS IT WILL CHANGE OVER TO LIGHT FREEZING RAIN... FREEZING DRIZZLE... SLEET... OR LIGHT SNOW. ALTHOUGH AMOUNTS LOOK TO REMAIN LIGHT AT THIS TIME... ANY FREEZING DRIZZLE OR FREEZING RAIN COULD CAUSE DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.

Because the 90% of the state that can't deal with driving in this weather won't stay home.

Y'all stay safe now, you hear?

Gustav.

From here, worst-case storm surge maps.

Not that any of you are really unaware, I suppose, but just to let you know that even I am paying attention.

I'm just having my emotional flither about it quietly, and then I'm going to rationally decide where to put my efforts toward charity, and whether giving locally will do more absolute good or not. (A lot of local organizations go short when people are drawn toward the emotional impact of a big disaster and send their money elsewhere.)

If you want to pray with me, then know I'm praying.
And if you don't want to pray with me, that's ok, I'm still praying.

"Save me, O God, For the waters are come in unto my soul."
(Psalm 69)

"And the breath of God moved upon the face of the waters."
