From a comment I made in a protected entry (this excerpt does not touch on the subject of the entry):
"I have seen dollies made out of the peg clothespins, with the round ball at the top for the face and string wrapped around them for clothes.
But when I went to do laundry with my grandmother, what I actually remember is the handkerchief dolly. She would tie a knot the size of the end of her thumb in one corner of a hanky, then fold the hanky into a triangle diagonally (with the knot being the top of the two middle corners). The two side corners would be folded around and the top folded down a bit to make a "swaddled baby".
I can't seem to find a picture of this sort of doll anywhere-- its virtue was that, unlike the usual sort of "kerchief dolly", it didn't make the hanky unusable afterwards. (It was meant to be a temporary amusement.)"
I can't find a picture of a knotted-head temporary handkerchief dolly online.
