Harry Potter mysteries (yes, probably spoilers!)

I've been thinking about some of the inconsistencies in the Harry Potter canon, and think I may have come up with a possible solution for at least one.

( --How many students are there at Hogwarts? )

So, does the idea of solving mysterious inconsistencies in fiction make you think, or just get annoyed with the author?
