Once it's been 20 years...
Apr. 9th, 2012 02:36 amSo this is a story about my late uncle, the well-known athlete.
My uncle actually did play football in high school and was decent at it, but in adult life mostly preferred co-ed softball. Once he was visiting, and shared this story:
"So, a few years ago, I heard that Tulsa was getting a minor-league professional football team. I thought about trying out, but couldn't see a reason to. And now I really wish I had, because the team didn't stick around very long."
"Why, do you think you would have made it?"
"Not at all-- but that's not why. You see, at first I could tell people that I tried out for the team. A few years later, the story would be that I made it onto the team but had been injured in pre-season training.
"A few years after that, the injury would have happened after a few unremarkable games. And 20 years later, when people barely remembered that we'd had a team, I would have suffered my knee injury immediately after scoring a game-winning touchdown."
By this time my mom and I were rolling in laughter.
I thought about that story the other day, when I heard the news that Monkee Davy Jones had passed away. You see, I was at the concert in OKC during their tour in the late 1980's... and since it's been over 20 years, I can confidently tell you that I was on the very front row by the stage, and I'm pretty sure Davy and I made eye contact at least once. *wink*
