Someone I vaguely know who lives in Michigan is collecting postcards for her class for their geography unit (they're 2nd graders).

I picked up a few at the store and started addressing them, then decided to write interesting facts about Oklahoma (at least, interesting in terms of what 7-8 year olds might find amusing).

Here's what I wrote-- what's interesting about where you live?

  • The shopping cart (trolley) was invented by an Oklahoman, Sylvan N. Goldman.
  • Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma.
  • "This Land is Your Land" (one of our most popular patriotic songs, for those across the pond) was written by Oklahoman Woody Guthrie.
  • The Oklahoma state flower is not actually a flower at all. The story goes that an early pioneer lost his daughter one winter, and when searching for something to leave on her grave, the prettiest thing he could find was the green leaves and white berries of mistletoe. In gratitude, he wanted mistletoe to be declared the state flower, and so it was.
  • The National Weather Service, which issues all storm watches and warnings for the entire United States, is based in Norman, Oklahoma-- so anywhere in the US that you go, if you see or hear a weather alert, it comes from Norman.
