It would be really, really easy to figure out how much yarn I'd used in something if I had a good set of scales, preferably one that measured down to the gram. Right now I'm trying to figure out if I have enough yarn to do one more dishcloth-- which would be easy if I had access to a balance. Or, um, a ruler, actually, the kind with three holes in it :

Attach the completed dishcloth by the tail end to one hole in the ruler. Attach the remaining yarn skein, securely tied, to the other hole, equidistant from the center. Stick a pencil or knitting needle on the edge of a desk so that the point projects over the floor, weighting it down with a book, then put the ruler center hole over the pencil. Get down to eye-level with the ruler and eyeball it against the edge of the desk, which is presumably level. Voila, primitive balance.

ETA: For those of you who don't know, here is a piece of handy information:
If you are paging someone and you go to key in your number and screw up, press ***. For most paging companies, that erases everything you've put in and lets you re-enter the number.
