Blackrock Depths, Saturday 4/26

Participants:

Nhinx, level 50 priest (Shadow/Disc spec), main healer

Neogensis, level 58? paladin, protection spec, main tank

Zoomba, mid-50's warrior, DPS spec, DPS and off-tank

Lintra, 50 paladin, prot spec, DPS

Charisty, 48 hunter, beast spec, DPS

Positive:

Group kicked off pretty promptly at 7am server time as planned.

When the tank and DPS worked together, kills were pretty quick. The actual fighting didn't go too badly and in cases where we wiped we generally pulled together a strategy and tried it another way.

Several greens dropped and a few blues.

Neutral:

We had a few issues, which I am not sure are resolved, regarding watching each other's mana. Briefly, my character needs mana to heal, and anyone in the group can see on their screen how much of it I have. There is no reason for them to be starting a fight when I have very little mana.

More briefly, I really shouldn't have had to scream "MANA!" to stop people from pulling more than once, especially after buffs have been requested and I've just given them out. I shouldn't have to explain that "HAY GIZE WHEN I DONE BUFFINS YOU I GOTS NO MANA" more than once.

Negative:

Looting.

Explanation begins here:
So, for those who aren't playing along at home, here is how loot works.

Me and 4 of my bestest buddies kill a creature. I right-click it and we all get shown what the item is. Now, there are two kinds of nicer items-- BOE and BOP. BOE means Bind On Equip-- anyone can carry this item around, give it to a friend, sell it in the auction house, put it on themselves, or do whatever with it. BOP, on the other hand, is Bind On Pickup. Once someone picks up a BOP item, they absolutely cannot give it away to another player.

Now, when we all get shown the item, there's an in-game dice-roller thing that will distribute it randomly. It has 3 buttons: Need, Greed, and an X to close the window. Clicking Need or Greed displays a roll between 1-100 for the item. The way that it works is that all who hit Need get to roll first and the highest wins. If only one person hits Need then they get it automatically. If no one hits Need, then all the people who hit Greed roll for the item, and highest wins. Once everyone closes the window with the X, or once the timer runs out (30 seconds?) with no one clicking either Need or Greed, the item is up for grabs by anyone who loots it.

Why would people do that? Because in the case of a BOP, we want to make REALLY sure that the right person gets it, and if you use the in-game roll then there's the issue of, for instance, the timer running out while the healer is paying more attention to keeping people alive than getting themselves loot*, or people having questions about whether they can roll need and the timer running out while it's being discussed (and if others have already rolled, then they all get a chance and the person who waited to discuss doesn't).

So, the usual rule is this: "Roll all BOE, pass all BOP." That is, use the in-game roll to allot the bind on equip items that can be passed around if someone changes their mind, but pass with the X so that detailed discussion can take place on bind on pickup items.

*(HAY GIZE STOP RITE CLICKAN 2 ATTEKK U IS LOOTINZ BAI MISTAYKZ)
Explanation ends here.

Soooo, the first blue BOP drops. It's a cloak with +Stamina. Now, maybe we made a mistake in not going over this loot rule first. But, the first thing Lintra does is yell "All pass!"

I pass. Charisty passes. Zoomba and Neo roll Need. Lintra, in a sneak move, also rolls Need, and wins the item. (ETA: Originally I had said that Lintra was exasperated, but corrected this per comment.)

"Whut?"

"Um, I said ALL PASS."

"But I needed it."

"ALL PASS!"

(it helps to put this in a Monty Python YOU SHALL NOT PASS voice)

"uh. ok."

My suggestion for next time, by the way, is to macro the following:
/p Loot: BIND ON EQUIP: Roll greed if you want, need if you need.
/p BIND ON PICKUP: ALL PASS. We will roll to use & roll to sell afterwards.

Soooo, we continue fighting, and a few wipes later a BOP item drops that's a caster offhand, and I get it, no questions. Hooray.

Next up, our next blue BOP item is a mail belt. I can't wear mail, being a priest, but the other four characters can-- however, three of the four (paladin, other paladin, warrior) can wear plate, which is much better. They all pass, hooray!

Lintra says, "Roll to use."

Clarifying: Roll to use means, if the item is an upgrade for what you have and you would immediately put it on and wear it, then you can roll to use. Otherwise, you should not roll if you won't use it. The immediately obvious decision here is that the hunter should be rolling alone, to be blunt.

Immediately, the warrior rolls 1-100 and gets 100. He then puts up a fuss about how he "won" the item and should get to loot it, regardless of how he isn't going to wear it, and regardless of how it IS an upgrade for the hunter, and TOTALLY ignoring the "roll to use."

This was the last blue item to drop, and we called the event after 2.5 hours after a wipe on the final boss.

I would add one last negative point, which is that after 2.5 hours, when those of us who are on third shift said "hey, we need to be going to bed" there was a whole lot of "oh please" whining. It leaves a very unpleasant taste in one's mouth when people can't gracefully end an instance in a timely manner.

As a final note, remember the guy I complained about who macroed the explicit heal instructions, and who took the book out of the guild bank for his 22 priest? That's the warrior who went with us. He also had the annoying habit of demanding heals and buffs regardless of what other people were doing at the time, and whether they were able to do it for him (or even though he could have done it himself, if he'd thought to bring bandages and food).

We were giving him one final chance, and he's now on the Do Not Group list for everyone in the group.

Summary: We did some l2p (learning to play) and had a good time, got some loot, finished a quest. We might do it again soonish.
