Dear Oklahoma men:

If you plan on having children, and especially if you plan on having daughters (because you've obviously taught this stuff to your sons for years), PLEASE consider the following:

*Girls who don't learn to drive from a parent gain less advice about things their parents know.
*Girls who don't get lots of experience driving in different conditions with their parents gain less advice about driving in those conditions (and have to figure it out themselves).

*Girls who learn to drive different vehicles are more independent:
**They can drive themselves home if a date goes wrong, no matter what the weather.
**They can drive a date home who has been drinking rather than allowing the date to stay at their house if they aren't comfortable with that.
**They can drive an injured friend to the doctor, or pet to the vet, without having to beg for help.
**They can buy furniture and move it themselves or with a group of female friends, and not have to depend on the mystical "men's pickup knowledge" to do so.

Do you want a daughter who's independent, or one who begs for help?
What are you creating when you don't teach your daughter to drive in ALL conditions?

Get your daughter a damn safe car, not a lightweight piece of plastic crap or a broken-down pickup with Zen steering. Get her something with a metal body she can wrap around a telephone pole, and then teach her how NOT to skid into that telephone pole, even if she cries and says she's scared to learn to drive in the ice.

Would you rather deal with your daughter crying and being scared in front of you, or know that someday, in the future, she may be crying and scared and have to learn this stuff on her own WITHOUT your help? Would you rather your little girl got pressured into giving her virginity to someone because she was too scared to leave him and drive home in the rain? Don't you love your daughter enough to teach her what she needs to survive?

There are an awful lot of unloved little girls in Oklahoma, and by God, I got stuck behind three of the idiots this morning. The road is fine, don't stop halfway out of the driveway, I'm waiting on you to back up. And for the love of all that's freakin' holy, I know we're not going the 50 MPH speed limit, but don't STOP in the road because you think you see a slick spot!

I called and thanked my daddy this morning for something he did half my lifetime ago. He's a good man, and a good driver.
